The ships selected for the squadron were the frigates Chesapeake, Constellation, the thirty-six-gun New York, the twenty-eight-gun John Adams, and the twelve-gun schooner Enterprise. However, these ships were in different states of readiness, and as such, they did not depart as a squadron. Instead, each ship departed when it was ready.
