Ten years later (1863), the Idaho Territory also was spun away from Oregon. On 14 February 1859, Oregon became America's 33rd state. Washington Smaller in size than Oregon but more populous, Washington encompasses 66,582 square miles and has a 157-mile coastline.

Early on, the land was predominantly under the control of British and Russian interests, but following the highly publicized Lewis and Clark expedition, Americans from the central and eastern United States flooded into the region in great numbers, eventually leading to the Bear Flag Revolt for independent statehood in 1846. Although the revolt failed, the United States invaded the area that same year. When the Mexican War ended in 1848, Mexican interests in California were ceded to the United States.

Ten years later (1863), the Idaho Territory also was spun away from Oregon. On 14 February 1859, Oregon became America's 33rd state. Washington Smaller in size than Oregon but more populous, Washington encompasses 66,582 square miles and has a 157-mile coastline.
